12/12/2017 0 Comments its only a friday thing!! At Speer, the seniors are required to do an internship correlated to their major. My Internship is at Illinois Bone and Joint Institute (IBJI). My internship is only a few minutes away from my house, also at my internship, there is a lot of Physical Therapist(PT) and a small section for Occupational Therapist(OT) to work in. My supervisor is an Occupational Therapist her name is Emily Judas, I work from 7:30am-4:00 pm. What I do at my internship is I sit with Emily and she shows me the list of patients. She explains to me the type of injuries they have and what type of treatment she is going to give them. Then we go meet her first patient and I usually get them a hot pack which starts to loosen up their muscles. Then she stretches out the patient and when she is done with that she gives me a list of activities. I am supposed to do those activities with the patients to stretch and strengthen their muscles. In my internship, you have to be able to multi-tasks because Emily gives me at least 2-3 patients to do exercises with at the same time. At noon all the Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist eat together only on Fridays. Other days they have different lunch schedules so this is the only time they get to eat together. Which I really enjoy because I get to meet all the Physical Therapist. How I got my internship was by my godmother she works with the clinic she does the billing for the company. My godmother was able to contact the owner of IBJI and arrange an internship for me. I choose this internship because I want to major in Occupational Therapy, so being able to work with an actual Occupational Therapist will show me if I want to pursue this career. So this internship is like a sneak peek of what I might be doing if I choose to go towards that career. What I enjoy about my internship is that it's close to home and I get to help people get better. What I don't enjoy is that some of the exercises are repetitive and since my internship is on Fridays a lot of people cancel or just don't show up to their appointments. Based on my internship I haven’t changed my mind about what I want to major in college. In fact, this internship has made me be surer of what I want to do in college. I feel confident that I want to do this career since I am experiencing it first hand. Getting internships in high school is the best thing you can do because you can see experience it first hand try to make your internship close or the major you want to pursue in college. So the internship can help you decide if that's the field you want to pursue. Also, make sure to take initiative and always look for opportunities.

11/30/2017 0 Comments Unforgettable SummerAt Speer Academy, we do this program called Summer of a Lifetime, SOL, which we do our sophomore year. We research colleges and see what summer programs they offer and if we apply to them. College counselors, helped us find programs that are a good fit and that we would be interested in. But before we started doing all that college research we had to declare a major. At the beginning of sophomore, they gave us a list of STEM careers and we had to pick one that we were interested in. After picking one the school had a ceremony and every sophomore individually went up to the microphone and said what they were majoring. Based on the major you had declared we would research summer programs related to that major. Additionally, my major was Occupational Therapy, which helps people regain their motor skills, so I spent my sophomore year looking up colleges that had summer programs related to my major. I found one at Auburn University it was a nursing program. The program wasn't really about my major, but occupational therapy and nursing fall under the small umbrella of medicine. My program was five days long I had to fly to Atlanta then get into a shuttle bus to drive for about an hour and a half. When we got to Auburn they gave me a key and showed me my dorm. I got to meet my roommate her name was Parker she was from Alabama. Most of the people I met were from Alabama I was the only one that hadn’t looked for the program by myself. The first day of class we got a tour of the campus inside and outside. We saw how nurses take their final by using robot dummies. The robots can be controlled by the professor which can make the robot throw up and bleed. The teacher also talks about the robot so the nurses are supposed to be there and react to the different scenarios the teacher gives them. We were also taught how to give different injections, we practiced in a piece of sponge covered with rubber layer material which is supposed to represent skin. So they taught us how to give Tuberculosis shot and how to give the flu shot and muscle shots. For each shot, there are different ways of actually putting the needle and grabbing the skin. We also got to learn how to put tie stitches in a piece of sponge. We got to learn how to take blood pressure and also how to take someone’s IV. I remember I had mixed feelings about college like can I really go to college and graduate. Just by going to summer of a lifetime I was able to see myself graduating college. Doing summer of a lifetime opened my eyes and made me see it is possible to graduate in the medical field in college. So by me going to a college over the summer, I was able to experience how it will be living away from home. Going to a college over the summer will open up your eyes and make you see that it is possible to graduate college. It was also worked to your advantage because not a lot of people get that experience. Some benefits of going to a college in high school are that you get to see early what college life will be like and what to expect when you go to college. I was able to see how classes felt how lectures felt. I got to experience different cultures and got to meet a lot of new people who I am still friends with. Getting an experience early for college will give you a head start and will make your applications for college look great. |
